AT 67, I FINALLY FOUND A BLOUSE THAT DOES NOT MAKE ME FEEL FRUMPY

I have never written anything like this before, and I want to say at the start that I am not a writer and I am not in the habit of telling other women what to wear.

My blouse drawer had quietly become a sad little place. Every one of them was thin, or shapeless, or the kind of safe that keeps you warm but does not do a single thing for you. I would put one on under a cardigan and watch the whole outfit fall a bit flat in the hallway mirror.

You do not stop wanting to look nice at our age. You just stop having a blouse you feel like yourself in, and a Charleston summer does not make that any easier, not when half of what looks pretty on the hanger goes limp the second you step outside.

THEN MY SISTER WORE HERS TO LUNCH

It did not look like the blouses I already owned, or at least not the sort in my drawer. A long, fluid V-neck, nothing thin or clingy about it, thrown over jeans without a second thought, and she looked pulled together, not like she had tried too hard.

I have worn it more times than I can count since. To lunch, to the farmers market, to my granddaughter's recital. It has quietly become the thing I reach for when I want to feel like myself.

THREE THINGS I HAVE LEARNED SINCE

One. It does not cling in the heat. It falls loose and skims past everything instead of sticking to me the moment the air gets heavy, which around here is most of the summer.

Two. The V-neck does the work. It opens things up around the face so I do not have to think about jewelry, and I have worn it plain more times than not and still had people ask if I had done something different.

Three. It goes both ways. Jeans and sandals for the market, or tucked in with a blazer over it for something dressier, and nobody would guess it was the same blouse.

If you and I were sat on the porch and you asked me, this is what I would say.

If your blouse drawer is full of perfectly sensible things and not one of them makes you feel nice, it is worth ten minutes of an evening to have a look. Not because a blouse changes anything. It does not. But getting dressed in the morning and recognizing yourself is a small thing I had quietly stopped expecting, and I would rather you did not stop expecting it either.
