At 67, four women asked me what I had on at a family cookout

I am 67 and I am not one for putting things on Facebook. But four different women asked me what I had on at a family cookout on Saturday, and it started to feel a bit mean keeping it to myself.

Cashmere, at my age, spending money on something that nice. I know. That is exactly what I thought too.

It is from Dorothy & June, a small boutique here on the coast that has been quietly dressing women our age for a few years now. They have their Summer Sale on at the moment, on their cashmere sweaters. Mine is a soft loose-fit pullover in blue.

What I told them

I very nearly did not order it. But it is the easiest thing I own now. You put it on over anything and you are dressed, nothing scratchy, nothing to fuss over. And the loose cut keeps it looking like a sweater I chose, not one I gave in to, even on the days I am just running errands in it.

What happened at the cookout

I wore it with sandals, and Denise told me I looked like I had made an effort for once, which I have decided to take as a compliment.

I have barely had it off since. On the porch, to the market, round to my daughter's.

Three things I have learned since

One. Nothing to fuss over. You put it on over anything and you are dressed, no waistband or scratchy wool fighting you, no second thoughts required.

Two. The cut is what saves it. A tight sweater would have me tugging at it all evening. The loose fit is what makes it look chosen, not given in to.

Three. It goes everywhere. On the porch, to the market, round to my daughter's, it never feels like the wrong choice.

About the price

I did go and read the reviews before I ordered. This exact sweater sits at 4.8 out of 5 from 896 of them, which is higher than almost anything else I have bought this year.

It is $39.95. It was $89.95, and the reason I am posting today rather than next week is that the Summer Sale is on now and it only comes in five colors, so the popular ones go first. Once the season's stock is gone, it is gone until the weather turns again.

What I would tell you if we were friends

If you have quietly started reaching for whatever is warm and forgiving because nothing with real texture feels good any more, but you do not want to look like you have given up, this is where I would start.

That is the rarest sort of thing to find at our age. Something you can throw on without a thought that still looks like you chose it.
