A letter from a reader

AT 69, I STOPPED PACKING A CARDIGAN I WAS EMBARRASSED TO WEAR

I have never written anything like this before, and I want to say at the start that I do not work for anybody and I am not in the habit of telling other women what to throw over their shoulders.

But three different women asked me about my cardigan at a dinner on the porch this past Saturday, and it started to feel a bit mean keeping it to myself.

It is the evenings I want to tell you about first. You know the ones. Warm enough for bare arms at six o'clock, and by eight there is a breeze off the water and everyone is quietly regretting not bringing a layer. For years my answer to that was the same heavy cardigan I have owned since I cannot remember when, the kind that adds ten pounds and about ten years the moment you put it on.

A cardigan that solved the chill and undid the whole outfit in the same motion. That seemed to be the trade.

I did not choose that, not really. Nobody sets out to own a drawer of shapeless things. It happens quietly, one practical purchase at a time, until every layer you reach for makes you feel a little more like you have given up on the rest of the outfit.

How it happens

Nobody warns you that a cardigan can age you faster than anything else in your closet. A dress can be lovely and a cardigan thrown over it can undo the whole thing in a second, boxy where the dress was soft, heavy where the evening only needed a whisper of warmth.

So you keep the good one for photographs and grab the shapeless one for real life, and you stop expecting your evening layer to look like it belongs with the outfit at all.

What I had wrong

Here is the bit I got most wrong, and I think a lot of us have.

I had decided a cardigan was just insurance against the breeze, not something that needed to actually look like part of the outfit. I pictured chunky wool, boxy shoulders, the sort of thing you keep folded on the back of a chair rather than one you would choose to be seen in.

It turns out that was never the only option. A proper open-knit cardigan can be light enough for a Charleston evening and still look considered, not like something you grabbed on your way out the door because the temperature dropped.

What I found at Dorothy & June

I saw it properly for the first time on my friend Carol, at that same porch dinner, draped loosely over her shoulders while the rest of us were hunting for a wrap or just accepting the goosebumps.

It is from Dorothy & June, a small American boutique here in Charleston, and it belongs to their Elegant Summer Cardigans collection. Hers was a soft open-knit in a warm ivory, light enough to fold into a bag, with a relaxed swing shape that skims rather than boxes you in. It looked like something she had chosen on purpose, not something she had settled for.

A soft knit cardigan laid out the morning it arrived
The morning it arrived. I had it draped over a dress before I had even finished my coffee.

It is lighter than I expected, the kind of knit you can gather in one hand, and it does not add bulk across the shoulders the way my old ones always did. It works over a sundress, over a plain top and linen trousers, over practically anything I already own. That is really all there is to it. It is not complicated. It is just a cardigan that somebody actually thought about.

What happened that evening

I wore it the following week, first to a dinner and then, without really planning to, to a string of ordinary evenings after. Out on the porch, to a friend's for cards, to the market when the morning was cooler than expected.

Wearing the cardigan out to dinner

Three women asked me about it that same Saturday. One on the porch, one refilling her glass in the kitchen, and one was Carol herself, who noticed I had gone and found my own after admiring hers only two weeks before.

She said it looked like something I had planned the outfit around, not something I had added at the last minute because the evening turned cool. What I noticed more than the compliments, though, was that I had stopped thinking about the cardigan entirely, which had genuinely never happened to me before. I was not tugging it straight or feeling swallowed by it. I sat down to dinner and did not think about what was on my shoulders once.

Where it lives most evenings now. Folded over the porch chair, not tucked away in a drawer.

Three things I have learned since

One. Open-knit is not the same as flimsy. I was braced for it to feel insubstantial, and it does not. It has enough structure to hold its shape over a shoulder without ever feeling heavy.

Two. It goes with more than I expected. I did not think one cardigan would work with a sundress, a linen shirt, and my everyday jeans, but it has quietly done all three, and it has looked right every time.

Three. Light does not mean cold. I worried a knit this soft would not actually cut the breeze. It does. It is warm enough for a Charleston evening without ever feeling like a blanket.

About the price

I want to be straightforward about this part, because the price is what made me pause in the first place.

Mine came out to just under eighty dollars during their Summer Sale, marked down from a good deal more.

My first thought, honestly, was that there had to be a catch, because a cardigan that actually holds its shape and looks like this usually costs more than that.

There is no catch that I have found. Dorothy & June is a small boutique selling directly, so there is no department store taking a cut in the middle, and this was during their Summer Sale, when they mark down the season's pieces before the styles turn over for fall.

I did what I imagine you are doing now and read the reviews before I ordered. Just under eight hundred and fifty of them across the boutique, and the same things kept coming up about the fit and the quality. I did not deliberate long once I saw the price, and by the time I mentioned it to Carol, a couple of the popular colors were already thinning out.

What I would tell you if we were friends

If you and I were sitting on my porch with a glass of iced tea and you asked me straight out, this is what I would say.

If your evening layer is still the heavy, shapeless one you keep meaning to replace, the one that solves the chill and undoes the outfit in the same motion, it is worth ten minutes of your evening to go and look at something lighter.

Not because a cardigan changes anything important. It does not. But there is something to be said for reaching for the same easy layer without a second thought, instead of choosing between warm and put-together.

The Summer Sale is on right now, and the popular colors have already started thinning out.

I have not reached for my old cardigan once since I found this one.
